Commission proposal on lorry drivers' hours is rejected

Brussels, 30/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 29 September, the EP committee on employment and social affairs rejected a plan to subject all EU lorry drivers to the same working time rules, an EP press release states. The legislative text, which would have called on the Commission to apply these rules to self-employed drivers as well as those employed by haulage firms, was rejected by 25 votes to 24, because political groups could not agree to include the self-employed. The rejected text would have required the Commission to take measures with the EP to develop new rules to include self-employed drivers. The EP must now draft a new report on the Commission's proposals with a view to amending the legislation on working hours, the press release states. (G.B./transl.jl)
