Court finds against award of public contracts in Germany, but does not impose penalty payments

Luxembourg, 25/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - Germany has avoided the penalty payments the Commission wanted imposed over the award of public contracts in the Land of Lower Saxony. On 18 July, the European Court of Justice found that the Federal Republic was guilty of failing to ensure that Community law was applied, but felt that the imposition of financial sanctions was not necessary, as the contracts in question had been terminated.
