Brussels, 21/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - Putting its threat into action, the Commission has decided to bring Poland before the Court of Justice (third stage of the infringement proceedings under article 226 of the Treaty) for its persistent infringement of Community legislation on the protection of nature (EUROPE 9376).
Taking the view that there was nothing new in the argument put forward by the Polish authorities (in a letter received on 19 March) to justify the construction of a motorway in the Rospuda valley - a natural area protected under the “Habitat” directive - the Commission is to bring the matter before the Court, asking it to rule on interim measures to bring an immediate halt to the work, without waiting for the ruling to be returned.
