EU relaxes arms embargo

Brussels, 13/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - The arms embargo imposed on Somalia by the EU since 2002 is to be relaxed to facilitate deliveries of arms and military equipment to a future African Union (AU) mission in that country.

The EU Council decided on 12 February to amend, without debate, its common position of 2002 (2002/960/CFSP) on the arms embargo, to bring in a further exemption applicable to supplies of weapons and military equipment and technical training and assistance intended solely for the support of, or use by, the AU mission.

The exemption was required to give effect to UNSC Resolution 1725 (2006). (an)
