Brussels, 13/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - On 12 February, French UMP MEP Véronique Mathieu (EPP-ED), Belgian Socialist Anne Van Lancker (PES), Dutch D66 MEP Sophie in't Veld (ALDE), Italian PRC MEP Luisa Morgantini (GUE/NGL) and German Green Hiltrud Breyer (Greens/EFA) submitted a written statement on obstetrical fistula in developing countries. They called on the Commission and the Council to act urgently to (1) prevent fistula through having a legal age for marriage, promoting universal access to emergency obstetrical care, reproductive health education and the status of women; (2) improve health systems, health infrastructure, training and transfer of medical personnel for the effective treatment of fistulas; (3) encourage rehabilitation and social reinsertion for treated women; (4) improve political and financial support for the fifth Millennium goal for the development of maternal health; (5) support the campaign launched by UNFPA. This statement will be deemed to have been adopted by the Parliament if it gathers the signature of half of MEPs before 14 May 2007. (oj)
