Brussels, 21/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission believes that Portugal is on the right track to put an end to its excessive deficit no later than 2008, as recommended by the Council in September 2005, as long as it strictly executes the 2006 budget and continues to apply a rigorous strategy of budgetary cleansing in 2007 and the years thereafter. For the time being, the recommendation of new measures does not seem necessary.
