19/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - Graham Watson, president of the ALDE group at the European Parliament called on President Chirac to mention, during his meeting with President Mubarak on 19 April in Cairo, the case of Ayaman Nour, the Head of the Egyptian opposition's Democratic Party and candidate in the presidential elections last year, who is currently in prison. In a press release Mr Watson said that Jacques Chirac would probably discuss the Iranian nuclear impasse, as well as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but should also promote democracy in the Middle East. Watson indicated that barely a month ago, the European Parliament unanimously adopted a resolution calling for the release of Ayman Nour. He also explained that on the basis of an ALDE initiative, a letter jointly signed by MEPs and members of the US House of Representatives had been sent to the Egyptian authorities. Watson stressed that if there was not positive development to the issue of Nour's release, it was also because of the fact that EU Heads of State had not unanimously condemned human rights violations.
