Ombudsman says Council's decision to open more debates to the public is step in the right direction

Strasbourg, 20/01/2006 (Agence Europe) - The European Ombudsman, P. Nikiforos Diamandouros, has welcomed the decision by the Council of the European Union on 21 December 2005 to open more of its debates to the public (see Europe 9095). The Council announced its decision on 21 December 2005. According to the Ombudsman, "Citizens have a right to know what decisions are being taken in their name.
