29/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - In the context of the consultation launched by the Commission 12 May on the draft revision of the 1993 directive on medical devices, the organisation representing manufacturers of this kind of instrument, EUCOMED has reacted by congratulating the Commission on several of its proposed measures. At the same time EUCOMED calls for a new ban, or if that is not possible, an extremely strict limit on the re-use of single use mechanisms. As well as the classic bacterial infections that medical devices can transmit during their re-use if they are poorly sterilised, ECOMED points out that certain uses do not respect the manuals set out by the manufacturers and can have serious consequences or fatalities for patients. ECOMED cites the case of catheter reuse where particles that can break off could cause thrombosis in patients.
