Mobilisation of "Youth for Yes"

Brussels, 29/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - Ahead of the referendum due to take place in Luxembourg on 10 July on the European Constitution, young people from civil society, supported by several political parties, have launched the initiative "Jonk fir de Jo", in order publicly to support the Constitution, according to a press release. The "Youth for Yes" are convinced that this text is the best possible basis for the future development of the European Union, and feel that it will be capable of "helping to give new impetus to European integration- from integration, which is still mainly economic, to a more political Europe, with more democracy, more social and cultural values- whilst fully respecting all the different national models of society". The young people have created a website- http://www.jonk.lu- where anybody can show their support and express "their concrete ideas on the future development of the European Union". People are also invited to leave a comment on the "Main Europa", or "My Europe" visitors' book. The Constitution, "which creates a good framework, is one thing; transposing this framework into a concrete policy, which is adapted to the needs of the citizens, is quite another", state the "Jonk fir de Jo", who announced: "for this reason, we intend to give this book to the political decision-makers, in order to communicate our day-to-day concerns about Europe". The "Jonk fir de Jo" are also holding an awareness-raising event in Luxembourg on 2 July, "to be held against a backdrop of dance, music and debate". (For information: jonk@konk.lu).
