Greens angry over ITER plan

Brussels, 29/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - The announcement of the international agreement on building the international ITER reactor (EUROPE 8979) has provoked a profusion of angry reactions from members of the Greens/EFA group. Both Rebecca Harms from Germany and Mari Anne Isler-Béguin from France, described ITER as a white elephant or a project like those of the Pharaohs seeking prestige but that it was also “dangerous and useless”. These views clash with those expressed by the other groups such as German Christian Democrat Werner Langen and Paul Rubig from Austria. The latte spoke of “an opportunity for Europe” and underlined that it would not only be the energy sector that would benefit from the project.
