29/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - British Green Caroline Lucas affirmed in a press statement that G8 leaders during their Gleneagles summit in Scotland had to launch a revolution on climate change and drastically reduce their military spending if they wanted to make real progress in the fight against extreme poverty in Africa. The MEP will be taking part on 3 July in demonstrations in the Edinburgh area as part of the alternative summit, “The G8 Corporate Dream - Global Nightmare”. Lucas explained that poverty in the world and greenhouse gas emissions were the “inevitable consequence s of the G8 countries pursuit of ever freer international trade and economic globalisation””. In a press release Lucas indicates that the Greens at the EP had launched a consultation with their colleagues from the Scottish parliament on the draft law that would make Scottish ministers ”legally responsible for setting emission reduction targets”. Ms Lucas said that in view of the G8 summit, the Scottish parliament is being encouraged to “set an example to the rest of the world”. Lucas hopes that Scottish MPs will be braver than the G8 (which she says has already “watered down the action they plan to take”).
