Brussels, 20/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - The collapse of the European Council on the EU's Financial Perspectives for 2007-2013 has plunged Europe into a triple crisis - economic (regarding the Lisbon Strategy), constitutional and budget, regrets the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), wondering what is hidden behind the ideological battle over the Common Agricultural Policy and the British rebate. In a press release, the ETUC says another battle is emerging - between Europe as a political and social union based on a social market economy and social rights and Europe as a free trade zone. The ETUC claims that the British Presidency will probably made the political clashes over the future of Europe more acute, and argues it is high time to hold genuine debate on the EU's priorities, which should in turn determine the EU's budget structure. The ETUC says it will get involved in preparing for this great debate and urges the entire trade union movement to send out clear, strong messages in favour of social Europe.
