20/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - In its adoption last week of the report by Giorgios Dimitrakopoulos (EPP-ED, Greece), the committee on foreign affairs of the European Parliament has affirmed that foreign troops deployed in Iraq should be replaced by a UN peacekeeping force and that the EU should encourage the adoption of a new Security Council resolution to this effect. The Parliamentary committee, according to a press release, also took position in favour of the creation of an independent committee to look into crimes against human rights (to be made up of UN, EU and Iraqi experts). The resolution, which will be put to the vote at the July plenary, also voices the MEPs' concern at the deterioration of security in Iraq since the declared end of hostilities, and their hope that the lessons learnt from the war in Iraq will lead, in future, and throughout the world, to more multilateral, democratic and results-orientated conflict management. At the same time, the resolution recognises that the overthrow of Saddam Hussein paves the way for a democratic future for the Iraqis.
