Brussels, 20/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament's Committee on Regional Development agreed on 16 June to adopt a report by Ambroise Guellec (EPP-ED, France) on "the role of territorial cohesion" in regional development" and urged the European Commission to table "precise and detailed" proposals on this issue. An EPP-ED press release highlighted the items the rapporteur regards as a priority: - the principle of equality between citizens throughout the territory;- including the territorial dimension in the Lisbon and Gothenburg strategies;- the role of small and medium-sized cities ;- decentralisation ; - bringing sectoral policies and regional policy together so as to combine their impact on territorial development more effectively;- multi-level governance;- seeking new indicators alongside GDP to learn the regions' level of development and the obstacles to their development. In the explanatory memorandum to his report, Mr Guellec stresses that "territorial cohesion does not merely come on top of social and economic cohesion but enhances a vital cross-cutting dimension, the territorial dimension"
