20/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - At a meeting in Paris last week, the Assembly of the Western European Union (WEU) adopted a report by Konstaninos Vrettos on 'ESDP developments and Headline Goal 2010' arguing that 'the French and Dutch rejections of the European Constitutional Treaty makes it 'all the more important to maintain' the EU's commitment to achieving its 2010 Headline Goal' (see Europe Nos. 8965 and 8968). The Assembly approved other reports, including Ignacio Cosido Gutierrez's 'The fight against international terrorism: defence aspects', which argues that 'the EU should pool its resources in the fight against terrorism' and ensure the ESDP 'can make a more effective contribution to the fight against terrorism.' Following the recommendations of its rapporteur on the European Technology Acquisition Programme (ETAP), Edward O'Hara, the WEU Assembly agreed that 'funding and other limitations of ETAP had to be taken up by the European Defence Agency to make sure that 'European becomes an active and responsible player' instead of a 'sub-contractor to the Pentagon and part of an integrated US defence industry.'
