Brussels, 20/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - The international support conference in favour of Iraq, to be held in Brussels on 22 June under the joint chairmanship of the EU and the United States, is unlikely to reach immediate and concrete results (on reconstruction aid, for example), or any new initiatives, European and American sources explained on Monday. "This is not a donors' conference, or a conference on security in Iraq. The aim of this conference is to create a forum for the new Iraqi transition government to present its priorities, vision and strategy for the transition period leading in to the forthcoming elections, planned for December 2005", the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU stressed. The international community will also be called upon to reaffirm its support for the political and constitutional process begun by the transition government, for reconstruction and economic development and for the development of the rule of law in Iraq, according to diplomatic sources, but it is not expected that new initiatives in these fields will be announced on Wednesday. Over 80 countries (most of which will be represented by their foreign affairs ministers) and several international organisations (including the UN, to be represented by Kofi Annan) will attend. The conference will end with the adoption of a joint statement. A donors' conference for Iraq will take place in mid-July in Amman, Jordan.
