Brussels, 14/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Federation of European Publishers (FEP) met Commissioner Figel last week (responsible for education and culture) and expressed their concerns to him. They believe that there is still no single market for publishing in the territory of the European Union. The publishers voiced their shared interests and called for more coherency: intellectual property rights, taxation, cultural policies, and freedom of publication (including book prices, books and education, free movement of books. The FEE is calling on the Commission to ensure that the future Culture 2007 programme takes into account the problem of translation and all the cultural industries. They handed the Commissioner their recommendations so that the European Union accorded book publishers the backing they are requesting, notably for fighting the reading deficit and illiteracy.
