Opposition between United States and France hardens regarding lifting of embargo on arms sales to China

Brussels, 08/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - In the run up to next Monday's EU Council in Luxembourg (yesterday's EUROPE, p.4), tension has risen between France and the United States regarding the lifting of the embargo on arms sales to China. In an interview published on Thursday by the New China News Agency, Jacques Chirac reaffirmed his commitment of 27 January this year in favour of lifting the embargo.
