Foreign Affairs Committee urges Cypriots to approve Annan plan

Brussels, 14/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - The EP's Foreign Affairs Committee urges Cypriots to approve the Annan plan to reunify their island. It approved by a large majority a draft resolution that is to be voted next week in plenary. MEPs consider, as does Commissioner Verheugen, that the fundamental choice for Cypriots is between the Annan plan and no other solution in the near future. The Greek Cypriots present, observers at the EP, rose up against what they consider to be pressure against the free choice of Cypriots.

The representative for the UN Secretary General in Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, defended the Annan plan, criticising the fact that the Cypriot population is misinformed about its content. He also stressed that the people had not received sufficient explanation about the reality of the facts, and that an agreement cannot meet all their expectations.
