Brussels, 14/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - As we have already announced (EUROPE of 3 April, p.6), consultation under Article 96 of the Cotonou Agreement were opened on 14 April with Togo with a view to examining whether the political conditions for resuming cooperation between the EU and this country were fulfilled. Togo submitted a list of 22 commitments with a timetable for their effective implementation. Both parts agreed that Togo should report on implementation in June, then again in July. Where necessary, the EU could send a mission to Togo. "These are very clear commitments whose implementation would be easily verified", a Commission official said, stressing that any resumption of cooperation would depend on Togo scrupulously keeping these commitments. The Commission could develop a draft decision in July, he said.
