56% of Europeans consider immigration necessary for economy - 80% in favour of strengthened external border controls - strong support for common policy - publication on Monday

Brussels, 05/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - Europeans are in favour of a common immigration and asylum policy that allows economic immigration but stringently controls entry to Community territory, according to the Eurobarometer survey to be published by the European Commission on Monday. There is strong consensus for border controls (80%), but response is more mitigated concerning economic immigration (56%).
