Brussels, 05/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - Six Member States will be ready to implement the European arrest warrant on 1 January 2004 as planned, indicated European sources. The JHA Council is due to examine the issue on Thursday. In mid-September, only Spain, Portugal, and Denmark were in compliance. Now Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland and Luxembourg have caught up, indicated the same source. There is, however, a certain risk that Italy and the Netherlands will be late. The European arrest warrant will introduce a significant change that will enable Member States to enact rapid extradition procedures that is not subject to political or administrative control of the wanted or convicted parties. It was approved following the strengthening of European judicial cooperation after the attacks on 11 September 2001 (EUROPE 16 September 2003).
