THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/igc/italian presidency

05/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - Vice Prime Minister of Italy Gianfranco Fini (who represented the Italian government at the European Convention on review of the treaties) said on Tuesday before the foreign affairs committees of the House of Representatives and Senate that failure of the Intergovernmental Conference on the future European constitution could "plunge Europe into a serious crisis". The Italian Presidency, he said in particular, will do everything it can so that the future Constitution may foresee a double majority system in Council (Member States and populations) and also a reference to the Christian values of Europe. According to the Italian agency, ANSA, Mr Fini also spoke in favour of a referendum on the future Constitution.
