Brussels, 05/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - The lifting of the European de facto moratorium in force since 1998 on any new authorisation to market GMOs will be put to the test on 10 November, three days after the entry into force of two regulations on the traceability and labelling of GMOs. Representatives of the Member States sitting on this committee will be invited to pronounce themselves on Monday on the authorisation of transgenic BT corn, which is resistant to the herbicide gluphosinate ammonium, notified by the company Syngenta based in Switzerland. "This will be an introductory discussion. The vote will probably not take place for a month or two", said Beate Gminder, spokesperson to Commissioner David Byrne. The lifting of the moratorium, subject to a favourable vote under qualified majority, will thus not happen before then.
