EU asks WTO to rule on legality of Australia's quarantine regime for food products

Brussels, 29/08/2003 (Agence Europe) - The EU on Friday asked the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to rule on the legality of the quarantine regime Australia has been applying "for years" to imports of food products. These measures have "no scientific basis", says Brussels. A Commission spokesperson stated in a press release that the Union had no choice but to ask the multilateral arbitration service to intervene in this dispute, after negotiations in May 2003 failed.
