Increase in France's deficit in 2002 - Commission ready to launch new procedure in case 3% is exceeded

Brussels, 04/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - France's ministry of the economy announced on Tuesday that the country's public deficit amounted to 49.3 billion euro in 2002, against the expected 46.8 billion in the collective budget adopted last December by the National Assembly. Given this situation, that the ministry attributes to "the weakness in economic growth in the second half of the year", France's public deficits should, according to Bercy, be situated "around" the 3% limit of GDP.
