Solana and Schwimmer deplore hostage taking

Brussels, 24/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana, High Representative for CFSP, expressed his shock at the hostage taking at the theatre of Melnikova Road in Moscow, stating that he was in contact with the Russian authorities and that the Union was "ready to offer further practical assistance, as may be required". "We fully support the efforts of the International Committee of the Red Cross to secure proper treatment for the hostages, and to bring about their release", Solana states. He then adds that "a sizeable number of EU citizens is among" the hostages and that "the Heads of State and government meeting today in Brussels will have this also on their minds".

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Walter Schwimmer said: "The hostages should be released immediately. There can only be a political solution to the Chechen conflict. The Council of Europe is actively supporting all efforts in this direction. It will remain committed to the restoration of democracy, human rights and the rule of law in this part of the Russian Federation".
