Brussels, 05/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption, on Tuesday at first reading, of the report by Janelly Fourtou (EPP-ED, France), the Parliament approved the broad lines of the new programme to combat customs fraud, "Customs 2007". Amendments adopted only modify certain technical aspects of the Commission's proposal presented end January this year (see EUROPE of 29 January), mainly by introducing a better balance in the sharing of powers between the Council and Parliament, the customs policy group and the "Customs 2007" committee. The Parliament also hopes to be kept better informed by the Commission of how this new "Customs 2007" programme unfolds and of the results it reaches. Candidate countries will participate in the programme.
