Jerusalem, 05/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - Present of the EU Council, Per Stig Moeller, admitted that following an hour and a half meeting with Ariel Sharon, the Israeli Prime Minister said that there could be no peace with Arafat. The European peace plan for the Middle East (which is not the final version, he explained) "does not mention Arafat", Mr Moeller added. According to Mr Moeller, "The plan has been very well received by the Arab world, well received by Arafat and received positively by Israel's Minister of defence and Prime Minister Sharon.". According to an Israeli official, Ariel Sharon repeated that no real progress is possible while Yasser Arafat remains in place, as it blocks all genuine reforms that would allow an end to terrorism to be found. According to Mr Sharon, the road map deadline (the creation of a Palestinian State in 2005) is not realistic and if elections are organised in Palestine at the beginning of 2003, as proposed by the EU, "Arafat and Fatah will be re-elected with 99% as in former Communist countries or in Syria".
