Brussels, 05/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - Following the Earth Summit in which he participated, Romano Prodi, the President of the European Commission, travelled to Madagascar on Thursday for an official 24-hour visit. This is the first visit of President Prodi to the country since the Presidential elections in December 2001, which brought Marc Ravalomanana to power and whose legitimacy is still disputed by the African Union. Romano Prodi is expected to meet the Madagascar President, his Prime Minister, Jacques Sylla, as well as several member of the government. This official visit is testimony to the allegiance of the European Commission to the results of the election, with the European Union being the first within the international community to recognise its results.
