GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/danish presidency/enlargement

05/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - During a visit to the Netherlands on Thursday, Danish European Affairs Minister Bertel Haarder met his Dutch counterpart, Atzo Nicolaï, and Foreign Minister Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. With them, he above all discussed the ambitions of the Danish EU Council Presidency for the forthcoming EU enlargement. Mr Haarder gave a lecture on this occasion at the Clingendael Institute during which, while stressing the priority that enlargement holds for the Danish Presidency, he said: "At the same time, we shall do our utmost to drive forward the reform process of the Common Agricultural Policy during our Presidency. We need to find fair solutions. A solution on milk quota that implies that a candidate country should slaughter a high proportion of all its cows is not a fair solution. A solution that implies that a new Member State from the first day of accession becomes net payer to the EU budget is not reasonable".
