Greens support Grigory Pasko

Strasbourg, 05/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Green group and the regionalists from the European Free Alliance decided in Strasbourg on Wednesday to cal for Russian environmental journalist Grigory Pasko to be awarded the Sakharov Prize. Pasko was condemned to two years four months in prison by the Pacific fleet's military court after the publication of an article on the dumping at sea of nuclear waste and old arms. The group's Co-President Daniel Cohn-Bendit said that Grigory Pasko symbolised the situation in Russia, a country where freedom is not always respected when people reveal disturbing truths. He provided information about the disastrous environmental situation in the Barents Sea and Murmansk, where radioactivity has reached unbelievable levels. Giving the Sakharov Prize to Pasko, he said, would highlight that Russia's nuclear safety problems remain a source of major concern to the EU and the rest of the world.
