European Parliament amends proposal on tobacco aid regime to avoid political debate over future of the sector

Strasbourg, 14/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, in Strasbourg, the European Parliament adopted by 218 votes to 172 and 15 abstentions, the report by Portuguese Christian Democrat Arlindo Cunha, which is opposed to the political will of the European Commission to prepare the way for gradual dismantling of the premium and thresholds regime in favour of tobacco producers (see details of the report in EUROPE of 7 March, p;17).
