Brussels, 30/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel and the Czech Prime Minister Milos Zemann reached agreement in Brussels on Thursday evening at a meeting organised with the help of the Commission (which has acted as a go-between in recent months) on a compromise to end the dispute over the Temelin nuclear power station, 60 km from the Austrian border. The Brussels agreement (Prague is reported to have made safety guarantees) should enable the Czech Republic to end its negotiations over the energy chapter in the very near future (they had been blocked by Austria), probably before the end of December. Commissioner Verheugen said that they had been able to make an arrangement concerning measures to be taken to ensure the Temelin power station meets the security standards that apply throughout Europe.
