Constitution Intergroup calls on future Convention to develop a single proposal for a European Constitution

Brussels, 22/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Constitution Intergroup at the European Parliament (which groups MEPs from most political groups) has, with a view to the European Council of Laeken, appealed to the European institutions, the governments and national parliaments for support to the project of a European Constitution by end 2003, in order to "establish a European government which is responsible to the European Parliament". The Intergroup calls on citizens, the civil society organisations and the political forces to act together so that the Convention - which is to prepare the future Intergovernmental Conference and which must be a "constitutional Convention" - can draft a unique proposal for a European Constitution". It points out that "we will immediately start to take all necessary measures so that the European Parliament supports the Convention with proposals throughout its work, being ready to take all political steps so that, when the time comes, the European Parliament can propose its own draft of a European Constitution". "We encourage all parties in the Convention to agree upon a joint project for a European Constitution, and should not allow the absence of unanimity to hold us back", concludes the Intergroup (e-mail: european.constitution@skynet.be).
