French in favour of a more social Europe, according to Braibant report

Paris, 22/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - The French Conseiller d'Etat Guy Braibant has just handed the President Jacques Chirac and Prime Minister Lionel Jospin a report on the future of Europe drafted by a working group, which he chaired. One can notably ready that, in France, the debate over the future of Europe has changed in nature, to the extent that it no longer opposes partisans and adversaries of the European building process: in a certain manner, the Eurosceptics have become Europeanised and the Euro-enthusiasts are gripped in doubt. The change in attitude which, underlines the report, has opened an area for a more rich and calm discussion. Though the French are in favour of the election of the European President, the document reveals their lack of interest for institutional issues and their perception of the European building process as having excessively privileged economic and monetary integration to the detriment of the social dimension. Moreover the Braibant group concludes that the French seem to have a head start on their leaders and want greater European integration.
