Brussels, 22/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - The 2001 Descartes Prize (EUR 1 million) for exceptional scientific or technological results will be awarded for the second time on 27 November. The ceremony in Brussels will be attended by Commissioner Philippe Busquin. The selected projects cover developing new anti-HIV medicines; biodiversity and ecological processes on herbaceous land ecosystems; improving train safety; a portable brain-computer interface based on the instantaneous analysis of electrical encephalographic signals; mechanisms for inhibiting proteases in lung protection; the development of new asymmetrical catalysts for the chemical industry; and the photochemistry of cone intersections. The jury is chaired by the former President of Aérospatiale Matra, Yves Michot. The Prize is part of the Community programme "Increasing human research potential".
