Brussels, 22/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, while the EU Troika's trip to Central Africa continued with Mr Solana and Mr Patten, the Belgian Foreign Minister, Louis Michel, invited the representatives of the non-armed Congolese opposition and of the civil society to a round table possibly to be held in January 2002 in Brussels. Mr Michel trusts the ground may thus be prepared for the new stage in inter-Congolese dialogue planned for end January in South Africa, according to the Lusaka peace agreement. A majority of Congolese officials whom Mr Michel met on Wednesday evening agreed in principle to the meeting. "President Kabila renewed his commitment to reactivate serious and honest dialogue and considers that difficulties can be overcome", said Javier Solana, after a meeting of the Troika with the President of the DRC. The Troika also took part, on Wednesday, in the closing of the operation to disarm 1776 Rwandan fighters implemented by MONUC (Mission des Nations Unies en Republic Democratique du Congo) since 10 November in the former Belgian military base of Kamina (province of Katanga). "We shall leave here with a little more optimism, even though there is still a long way to go. There will be other MONUC monitoring operations, other meetings, other efforts", commented Louis Michel during his visit, cited by Belga.
