Strasbourg, 22/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament, when welcoming the progress achieved during the first and second negotiating rounds on the WTO framework convention for the fight against tobacco, formulated, by adopting a resolution from the British Conservative Caroline Jackson, President of the Environment, Health and Consumer Protection Committee, a series of demands in view of the position that the EU should adopt in the third negotiating round. The EP notably calls upon the Commission and the Member States to adopt a specific provision explaining that the Convention and the Regulations on Tobacco must apply in a general manner to all manufactured tobaccos, and to approve the draft Convention concerning the prevention of manufactured tobacco smuggling, The EU should plead for a ban on the sale of these tobaccos to those under 18 years of age, and to force manufacturers to include clear and visible advertising on the dangers for health.
