GENERAL NEWS / (eu) ep/mixed committees/delegations

22/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - MEPs, when following the rapporteur from the constitutional committee, the Spanish Socialist Carlo Carnero Gonzalez, put an end to the anomaly that existed since 1999, following a modification to the Parliament Regulations, it decided that the members of the interparliamentary delegations and the mixed parliamentary committees EP/third country parliaments would be selected by the Conference of Presidents (President of the EP and the Presidents of the political groups) instead of being elected by the plenary, as with the members of the permanent committees. It is necessary to re-establish the parallelism between these new forms of selection, said Mr. Carnero Gonzalez during the short debate, while recalling that these bodies will be renewed at the beginning of next year. My report was approved by the constitutional committee a year ago, also noted Mr Carnero Gonzalez, while stating his incomprehension over why it was allowed to lies on the backburner, despite repeated calls from the President of the constitutional committee Giorgio Napolitan and to have it adopted by the plenary.
