Mrs Neyts underlines EU's desire to convince WTO to maintain permanent dialogue with ILO

Brussels, 22/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - As acting President of the EU Council, the Belgian Minister delegated to Foreign Affairs Annemie Neyts reaffirmed the Union's undertaking to work towards the integration of "social governance" within the process of globalisation, during a meeting with the Director General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Chilean Juan Somavia, who she met in Brussels, this Tuesday. Mrs Neyts, who was part of the European delegation to Doha, regretted that the EU 15 where not supported by their trade partners in the formulation of a "strong declaration" on social standards and the need to establish a dialogue over the issue, notably between the ILO and the WTO, in order for globalisation to further contribute towards a global social development and the respect for fundamental rights. She underlined that the Commission was invited by the Council to continue and intensify its efforts aiming to convince the WTO to take part in such a dialogue, through a permanent forum. The Union and its Member States will for their part participate in the works that have just been launched in the ILO, within the working group specifically aimed at tackling the social dimension of globalisation, which should issue its results to the conference that the institution will hold in June 2003. The added value of Doha lies particularly in the fact that, for the first time, horizontal societal themes, in this case development and the environment, will form part of the WTO agenda, including the social theme, added Mrs Neyts. Also insisting: Trade cannot be disassociated from the social and societal context in which international trade takes place, all the more so when globalisations not only concerns trade and prosperity, but also the development of well-being and sustainable development.
