Brussels, 22/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - During the conference organised on 23 and 24 November in Seville on the initiative of Emma Bonino on "Women and the three Mediterranean cultures: Development, Democracy and Liberty", the Commissioner for Equal Opportunities Ana Diamantopoulou will send a call to the European Authorities and NGOs in favour of enhancing the role of women in external relations. Speaking as a women in a Mediterranean country (Greece) and given the present political climate, Mrs Diamantopoulou will insist over the need to make the Mediterranean basin an area of peace, prosperity, security and development. With regards to Afghanistan, Anna Diamantopoulou (who wrote a letter along these lines to Commissioners Pascal Lamy and Chris Patten) will insist for the international community to guarantee that Afghan women will be fully implicated in their country's reconstruction process and that they will participate in the new governmental structures in Kabul.
