ANIA to meet Parliament officials

Brussels, 22/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Board of Directors of ANIA (Association nationale des industries alimentaires, France), led by President Victor Scherrer, had meetings in Strasbourg last week at the European Parliament with the President of the European Parliament, Nicole Fontaine, the President of the Environment Committee, Caroline Jackson, and the President of the Agriculture Committee, Joseph Daul. A press release signals that during these meetings, three areas were focused on: the future European Food Authority (Mr Scherrer said that clarity would be needed very soon on how it would mesh with national agencies, like the AFSSA in France); the precautionary principle (Mr Scherrer said it should be implemented in a "realistic" manner since if applied "rigidly" it would act as a block); and the labelling and traceability of GMOs (ANIA says the draft regulation proposed by the European Commission is "unrealistic").
