EU slaps embargo on import of ruminants from certain East European countries

Brussels, 28/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Friday, the European Commission took Community measures aimed at protecting the EU from the risks of the propagation of the catarrhal disease (or "bluetongue") that has recently broken out in certain countries of Eastern Europe. By deed of that decision, Member States will have to ban all imports of ruminants (as well as their semen, embryos and ova) originating in Albania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Macedonia.
