In favour of European mandate for search and arrest

Brussels, 26/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - By adopting the report tabled by British Liberal-Democrat, Graham Watson, the European Parliament's Committee on Freedoms recommends the creation of a European search and arrest mandate in order to step-up the fight against terrorism, organised crime, trafficking in human beings, crimes committed against children, illegal trafficking in drugs and weapons, corruption and fraud. It considers that such an instrument would allow for complex procedures to be avoided. The Parliamentary Committee calls for the adoption of minimum rules at European level concerning acts linked to terrorism and their penalties. It recommends the abolition of formal extradition procedures and the adoption of the principle of mutual recognition of court decisions regarding terrorism.. The report, which will be submitted to Parliament's plenary at its first September session, in Strasbourg, also calls on Member States to adopt measures to prevent collaboration between violent groups in Europe.
