Use of Euro rises, but remains generally low

Brussels, 26/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - According to the quarterly note from the European Commission on the development in the use of the Euro, the use of the Euro in relations with the administrations rises significantly, be it for VAT declarations or customs duties, but remains globally weak. National contributions by companies in Euro rose slightly from 7.3% to 7.8%. Close to 33% of international payments are in Euro (43% in value). The share of Euro accounts rises noticeably and rises from 4.8% to nearly 8%, with a highly varied situation depending on the Member States. The level of Euro account openings accelerated and now stands at close to one account in five. Payments in Euro by individuals rose slightly: from 1.4% to 1.9% in volume and from 6.2% to 8.8% in value. The share of individual accounts in Euro rose and now reaches 3.2%. On average, a little more than 70% of electronic payment terminals are technically capable of accepting operations in Euro.
