Brussels, 26/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - In the name of the European Union, the Belgian Presidency made the following declaration: The European Union firmly condemns the violation of the cease-fire in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. It sends an urgent call for calm and the full return of the cease-fire. The EU reiterates once more that it is only through dialogue and negotiation that a long lasting solution could be brought to the difficulties experienced at present by the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. It calls upon the parties concerned to return to the negotiation and to show the necessary spirit of compromise. The European Union reiterates its attachment to the territorial integrity and the sovereignty of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. It hopes for a continuation of the rapprochement by it with the European Union, in the framework of the Stabilisation and Association process. The European Union reiterates its continued support to the new mission to Skopje undertaken today by the High Representative, Javier Solana, accompanied by the NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson, and the acting President of the OECD, Mr Geoana. All the parties, which are now more than ever faced with their responsibilities, must conclude the negotiations and agree on the necessary political reforms.
