Brussels, 26/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Council adopted a common position in which the EU supports the draft international code of conduct against the proliferation of ballistic missiles, established by the members of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). In line with the declaration made by the Gothenburg Summit on the prevention of the proliferation of ballistic missiles, the common position states that the "the Union supports the universalisation of the code" and "actively supports an ad hoc international negotiating process, leading to an international conference for its adoption in 2002". It adds that the process will have to be "kept open, transparent and inclusive", for the rest "the Union will pursue this initiative in full transparency with all the other interested parties".
