Spain and United Kingdom relaunch dialogue over Gibraltar

Brussels/London, 26/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Ministers for Foreign Affairs for Spain, Josep Pique, and Britain, Jack Straw, decided to relaunch the dialogue over Gibraltar, during a meeting on Thursday in London. The Ministers agreed over a methodology and the creation of working groups, which should push forward the works before a future meeting at the end of October beginning November, indicates a release from the EFE agency. The so-called "Brussels process" dialogue begun in November 1984 was interrupted three years ago, for lack of political will on the British side according to Josep Pique. The dispute between the United Kingdom over the enforcement of Community law on the Gibraltar airport blocked the adoption of several pieces of European legislation on aviation law. The Commissioner for Transport, Loyola de Palacio had postponed the adoption of these proposals for the establishment of a European "single sky", while awaiting a solution to this dispute.

During their meeting, the Ministers underlined their intention and their political desire to overcome the dispute over Gibraltar, indicated a press release from the British Minister for Foreign Affairs, which adds that the Minister for Gibraltar, Peter Caruana, would participate in the talks. Today's agreement restarts the process, which many thought dead. The two governments have decided that this is not the case and that we must work together to find solutions, stated Josep Pique, when underlining the "courage and rigour" of his British counterpart.
